TapeFade

Spot when aggressive traders get caught at price extremes and fade as the market reverses. Real-time detection of exhausted liquidity on fast timeframes.

Getting Started

1

Import

In NinjaTrader, go to Tools → Import → NinjaScript Indicator and select the TapeFade package (.zip).

2

Compile

NinjaTrader will compile automatically. Restart the platform if needed to ensure the indicator loads.

3

Apply

Open a 1-5 min chart (ES recommended), right-click and select Indicators, then add TapeFade.

4

Configure

Choose your Preset Mode (Balanced recommended). Watch for green and red circles.

Understanding the Signals

🟢

Green Circle - Trapped Sellers

Bullish setup: Large selling pressure got absorbed at lows, and the bar closed well above it. Buyers may step in next. Watch the next 1-2 bars for upside.
🔴

Red Circle - Trapped Buyers

Bearish setup: Large buying pressure got absorbed at highs, and the bar closed well below it. Sellers may step in next. Watch the next 1-2 bars for downside.

Preset Modes

Switch modes on the fly to match market conditions.

Conservative

Wait for the cleanest setups. Perfect for careful traders or choppy conditions.

  • Fewer signals = higher conviction
  • Ideal for low volatility sessions
  • Best for risk-averse scalpers

Balanced

The sweet spot. Great mix of signal frequency and reliability. Start here.

  • Recommended for most scalpers
  • Works well in normal volatility
  • Good for ES RTH sessions

Aggressive

Hunt every opportunity. Use during trending sessions or high volatility.

  • More signals = faster entries
  • Perfect for FOMC or open hours
  • Best in strong directional moves

Preset Mode

Controls signal sensitivity and filtering strength

Conservative, Balanced, Aggressive

Default: Balanced

Best Practices

Recommended Setup

Timeframe: 1, 2, 3, or 5-minute candles

Instruments: ES, NQ, MES, MNQ (most tested)

Range Bars: 15-20 tick range bars work well too

Mode: Start with Balanced, switch to Aggressive in strong trends

Workflow

Before Market Open:

Set your Preset Mode based on overnight volatility (VIX, overnight range).

During Trading:

Watch for green/red circles. Confirm with your entry plan (support/resistance, moving averages, etc.)

Session Changes:

Switch from Conservative → Aggressive as volatility increases, or vice versa.

What NOT to Do

❌ Don't trade every circle blindly—confirm with your setup

❌ Don't ignore the larger trend—use circles for counter-trend reversals, not trend trades alone

❌ Don't use on charts slower than 5min—indicator is built for scalping speed

❌ Don't chase signals after they've formed—wait for the next one

Workflow Examples

Fast Reversal Trade (Balanced Mode)

  1. 1.Green circle appears on 3min chart
  2. 2.Check: Is there support or a moving average below?
  3. 3.If yes: Place tight stop below lows, target 2-3 ticks up
  4. 4.If no: Skip—wait for next signal with confluence

Strong Trend Trade (Aggressive Mode)

  1. 1.During a strong uptrend, red circle appears
  2. 2.Check: Is there a major resistance level nearby?
  3. 3.If yes: Take a short with risk at recent highs, target recent support
  4. 4.If no: Fade the signal—trend is still strong up, skip short

Session Switch (Conservative→Aggressive)

  1. 1.Open: Using Conservative preset, low volatility
  2. 2.FOMC Release: VIX spikes, volatility jumps
  3. 3.Switch to Aggressive: More circles, faster opportunities
  4. 4.Return to Conservative after event settles

Troubleshooting

No circles appearing on my chart

  • Verify the indicator is loaded (check indicator list)
  • Ensure you're on a 1-5min timeframe (not 1-hour or daily)
  • Check that bars have sufficient volume (50+ contracts minimum)
  • Try switching to a different preset and reload the indicator

Too many circles—can't keep up

  • Switch to Conservative mode for fewer signals
  • Increase chart timeframe to 5min (from 1min)
  • Use only on high-volatility sessions; sit out low-volume times

Circles appear but orders don't fill

  • Circles trigger on completed bar close, not intra-bar
  • Confirm signal with your entry checklist before placing a trade
  • Use limit orders near signal price, not market orders

Performance is slow after adding TapeFade

  • Ensure your data feed is live (not replaying 100 bars every tick)
  • Use only TapeFade, no other heavy addons on the same chart
  • Restart NinjaTrader if the indicator loads slowly

FAQs

Can I use TapeFade on daily or weekly charts?

No. TapeFade is designed for 1-5min candles and 15-20 range bars. On slower timeframes, signals lose relevance.

What if I get a green circle but price goes down?

Circles are setups, not guarantees. Confirm with support, resistance, or moving averages. Always use a stop loss.

Should I use TapeFade with other indicators?

Yes. Combine with moving averages, support/resistance, or volume profile to filter signals and increase conviction.

Can I change colors or appearance?

Currently, colors are hard-coded (green for bullish, red for bearish). You can request custom colors in future versions.

Does TapeFade repaint?

No. Signals fire only after the bar closes, preventing repainting. What you see is what you get.

What if I'm trading ES on a different exchange timezone?

TapeFade uses your local chart data. Just ensure your data feed times are correct in NinjaTrader settings.

Pro Tips

Volatility Awareness

In choppy markets, use Conservative. In strong trends, use Aggressive for counter-trend fades.

📻Time Session Bias

ES open (9:30am-10:30am ET) has most liquidity. Circles are most reliable during this window.

Confluence is Key

Green circle near a moving average support? Better odds than green circle in empty space.

⚠️Size Your Risk

TapeFade is a scalping tool. Use tight stops (2-3 ticks) and small position sizes.
